Development for the seventh-generation Corvette started in 2007. Originally set to be introduced for the 2011 model year, its introduction was delayed for three years. It was finally released for the 2014 model year.Mid-engine and rear-engine layouts had been considered, but the front-engine, rear-wheel drive platform was chosen to keep production costs lower.
– 2014: The Stingray features a LT1 V8 engine with 460 HP making it the quickest, most powerful standard Corvette to date.
– 2015: Chevrolet announces the return of the Z06, powered by a LT4 supercharged 6.2L aluminum V8 engine with 650 HP. It is the most track-capable car yet, and the first to offer a supercharged engine, automatic transmission, and convertible option.
– 2016: A new C7.R edition Z06 is offered for the 2016 model year, limited to a production of 500.
– 2017: Return of the Grand Sport model which included the base LT1 engine.
– 2018: 65th anniversary Carbon 65 Edition available on Grand Sport 3LT and Z06 3LZ trims in both convertible and coupe bodies were limited to 650 units globally.
– 2019: Return of the Corvette ZR1 powered by supercharged LT5 which produces 755 hp
